For the second time this year Saturday, residents in Quang Ngai Province – this time on Ly Son Island – fled their homes and sought refuge in high places following a rumor that a tsunami was imminent.

Thousands went up a mountain and buildings until Sunday when local authorities assured them it was just a rumor.

“We confirmed through the radio and loudspeaker system that the tsunami information was just a groundless rumor and advised all of them to return home,” Vo Xuan Huyen, secretary of the island district party committee, said.

Local authorities had also sent staff to many areas to personally talk to people, but it was not until 4 am Sunday that they agreed to return, he said.

The police have launched an investigation to identify the source of the rumor.

Residents told the police that at around 8 pm Saturday, fishermen working in the sea off Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spartly) Islands informed their families in the island’s An Hai Commune that a tsunami might hit Ly Son soon.

At the same time, some others also claimed to have seen a warning on television and the Internet.

The rumor raged through the island and people believed it easily since at the same time the sky began darkening and heavy rain and strong winds lashed the island.

Trong cuộc trò chuyện kéo dài với hãng thông tấn TT của Thụy Điển vào tối qua, vua Gustaf phủ nhận những tuyên bố do Mille Markovic – một cựu trùm mafia đưa ra, theo đó ông này có những bức ảnh cho thấy nhà vua chụp ảnh với hai cô gái khỏa thân trong một hộp đêm.

“Không, chắc chắn là chúng không tồn tại”, nhà vua khẳng định và còn nhấn mạnh thêm rằng “thật khó để bình phẩm về thứ mà nó không tồn tại và cũng chưa ai từng nhìn thấy”.

Theo AFP, tòa án hoàng gia đã yêu cầu hãng truyền hình TV4 – từng đưa tin rằng một phóng viên của họ đã xem những bức ảnh này – đưa ra để bằng chứng để xác thực lời cáo buộc đó.

Đài truyền hình TV4 và một cuốn sách nói về thế lực ngầm tại Thụy Điển cũng cho rằng bạn bè của nhà vua sẵn sàng trả một số tiền lớn để ngăn chặn việc xuất bản những bức ảnh nhạy cảm.

Ander Lettstroem, một trong những người bạn lâu năm của vua Carl XVI Gustaf, thừa nhận vào cuối tuần trước rằng ông có liên lạc với những người tham gia vào một tổ chức tội phạm, nhưng nói thêm rằng đó chỉ là hành động của cá nhân ông mà không có liên quan gì tới Carl XVI Gustaf.

Khi được hỏi về những thông tin trong quyển sách này, nhà vua hôm qua bác bỏ không do dự: “Không! Tôi không biết gì hết”.

Những cuộc thăm dò dư luận mới đây nhất cho thấy đa số người dân Thụy Điển mong muốn vua Carl XVI Gustaf thoái vị và truyền ngôi lại cho công chúa Victoria, vốn được người dân yêu mến hơn nhiều.

The act has been subject to legal challenges on constitutional grounds, but was finally enacted in June of 2010. When the bill was passed, many companies such as 888.com immediately announced their intention to leave the US market. Many companies however declared that they would carry on – among them Full Tilt, Poker Stars and Absolute Poker.

It is alleged that in order to get around the regulations they channelled US funds through shell companie. Fake companies that ‘sold’ goods such as golf equipment and food were used to collect payments which were then channelled through a bank in which the poker companies had a 30% stake. Not only does this allegation suggest an illegal gambling operation, but also outright fraud.

The companies’ assets have been seized – including their domain names, which have been replaced by an FBI notice.

The Driving Standards Agency has released the details of the case (although not the unfortunate woman’s identity) following a Freedom of Information request. The same request also revealed that a man in the Midlands is currently waiting to take his practical test for a 37th time, having failed test 36 at the back end of 2010.

If that sounds pretty stunning, it’s worth pointing out that he still has some way to go to beat the record number of fails. That record is still the proud possession of Git Kaur Randhawa of Middlesex who took 48 attempts before finally being declared roadworthy in 1987. Presumably accompanied by a 21 gun salute and RAF fly-past.

You do kind of wonder what the problem is. The theory test is a series of 50 multiple choice questions of which you must answer 43 correctly to pass. Multiple choice!And there are a limited number of questions and you can take test tests online from various places (including at the DVLA itself). After 90 attempts and who knows how many thousand practices you’d think that your recall of the questions would be near photographic, but apparently not.

To be fair, we’ve all known otherwise bright people who couldn’t get to grips with exams – either due to the pressure or the very specific nature of the task of remember certain things. Even so, spare a thought for this poor woman as she embarks on lonely attempt 91 in the near future. Mystery woman: we wish  you well!

It seems unlikely doesn’t it? And yet that is what happened on this late-winter’s day.

As ever, there are two sides to the story. To the girls’ parents, this was a frightening, intimidating and heavy-handed encounter with officialdom, prying into the joyful playtime of their children. To the councillor, the picture was somewhat different:

“We are very proud of our parks and can’t have people ripping up public property. I am a reasonable person and would not have called the police if they were just picking two or three flowers, but this was totally disgraceful.”

It is certainly clear that the boundaries we might accept in terms of children’s behaviour vary wildly from person to person – but it is noticeable that the parents haven’t denied that the charge that their kids were taking more than 2 or 3 flowers. Either way, reports that the girl is too upset to return to the council-owned park in case her family “would be taken away by the police” shouldn’t fill anyone with gladness.

The Heart of England NHS Trust identified a string of underage children with serious drinking problems in a study last year and this was the youngest and most troubling case. Doctor’s fear that the boy will suffer withdrawal problems such as mood swings and the shakes, but could – more seriously – have suffered brain damage.

Nicolay Sorensen from Alcohol Concern said:

“To be diagnosed alcoholic, it’s possible this child would have shown a physical dependency. ’They would have had to ingest enough to cause withdrawal symptoms. It is a horrifying case.”

No details of the child’s background have been given, but the case will serve to highlight concerns about the availability of cheap alcohol for home use through supermarkets – and comes on the day that drink charities have pulled out of the Government’s proposed ‘alcohol responsibility‘ deal.

We’re in two minds on the issue, being both fans of the drink and opponents of people being sick outside our house. But using extreme outlying cases like this as a basis of or justification for law is rarely helpful. It’s also worth nothing that, despite the horror stories and tabloid front pages, we’ve been drinking less booze in Britain for several years now, so perhaps some of the bluster and hand-wringing is a little misplaced.

No comfort to the 3 year old boy, of course. Godspeed little man – and hope the rest of your life works out better for you.

Since Christmas 34 have died in floods and slides since Christmas in the south-east of the country, with the latest floods increasing the death toll, were killed in Teresopolis, 214 in nearby Nova Friburgo and 40 in neighbouring Petropolis. The floods have also caused 14,000 people had been driven from their homes. According to officials the area hit by slides had seen 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. More rain, possibly heavy at times, is forecast for over the weekend.

The President, Dilma Rousseff flew over the region in a helicopter, as the nation’s health ministry said it was sending seven tons of medication to the area, enough to treat 45,000 people for a month.

Jorge Mario Sedlacek, the mayor of Teresopolis, decreed a state of emergency, calling the disaster “the worst to hit the town”. About 800 search-and-rescue workers from the state’s civil defence department and firefighters were digging for survivors, but hopes were dimming.

Survivors were seen carrying their belongings through waist high water in an attempt to get to higher ground and many were trying to get hold of missing relatives even though phone services were not working.

Spectators witnessed an impressive show with fire boats showering water and police boats escorting the liners with their lights flashing as the Queen Mary led the processing along the Hudson River. The Statue of Liberty was flood lit in Cunard’s traditional red livery and as the ships lined up near the Statue a huge firework display was set off which featured plenty of red, white and blue the national colours of both the United States and the United Kingdom, the ships’ home country.

The marked event is special because it will be the only time all three ships will ever meet.

After the event the three vessels then headed under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and headed south on separate journeys, with the Queen Victoria staying around the Americas and Panama for the next few months and the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth continuing on their 103-day world tours.

The last time Cunard assembled their fleet all together was in 2008 in the home harbour of Southampton, before the Queen Elizabeth 2 was decommissioned.
