On the table is a $250 million makeover timed to celebrate the ballpark’s 100th anniversary and update the shrine of Major League Baseball to last for another century — and possibly host the 2014 All-Star Game.

Known as Wrigley 2014, the plan calls for new concourses, washrooms, concessions, skyboxes and a club seating lounge.

Adjacent to the ballpark, the team would finally develop the so-called triangle building and turn the street in between into a Fenway Park-style pedestrian promenade bustling with shops and restaurants.

The five-story triangle building promised to Wrigleyville residents in exchange for a bleacher expansion was supposed to house a 400-space garage, upscale restaurants, retail stores and rooftop garden and below-ground batting cages, pitching mounds and player workout facilities.

The $100 million building has since been redesigned to include more retail and office space at the expense of parking, with a stadium club replacing the rooftop garden. A smaller garage could be built on less valuable land away from Wrigley.

Sources said Tom Ricketts, the family’s point man on the Cubs sale, has seen all of the renderings, but has not yet signed off on a specific renovation plan.

“We’ll let the new owners speak to the future of Wrigley Field,” Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said Monday.

But after paying nearly $900 million for the Cubs and struggling to secure debt in a worldwide credit crunch, how extensive of a renovation would the Ricketts family be able to afford or be willing to bankroll?

“Presuming Tom and the family get this deal done and Major League Baseball approves them, then they’ll sit down and look at all of the Wrigley plans and see what they want to do going forward,” said Ricketts family spokesman Dennis Culloton.

Culloton reiterated that the family has no interest in reviving an ill-fated plan to have the state buy and renovate Wrigley. The plan surfaced under former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Despite the 2004 embarrassment tied to falling concrete, sources said the Ricketts family could decide to stand pat for a while. “The ballpark is safe and structurally sound. Substantial resources have been put into maintaining it,” said a source familiar with the issue.

Padres manager Bud Black Thursday said the Padres are going to follow a cautious timetable with Young.

“I came back too soon a couple of times,” Black said. “In the long run, nothing good comes of that. You can pass all the tests and feel good until you put a load on it.”

When Young’s shoulder bothered him after his June 14 start in Anaheim, the Padres hoped he might only miss one start and delayed putting him on the disabled list. Then, after the first of two cortisone injections, Young went on the disabled list June 17 with hopes of missing only two starts.

Young yesterday played catch for the first time since June 14.

“I don’t know the timetable, that hasn’t been addressed with me,” Young said. “But this is not something I am going to play around with.

“I’ve never been through anything like this. I’m not going to pitch until it is ready.”

Young already has missed two starts and would miss three more if the injury sidelines him through the break.

Meantime, Jake Peavy will not have the strained tendon in his right ankle evaluated again until Tuesday, which would be three weeks after he last pitched.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve even touched the ball,” said Peavy, whose earliest return is projected for late July-early August.

The Padres have two other starting pitchers on the disabled list – Cha Seung Baek (out since the end of spring training with two forearm strains) and Shawn Hill (out since April 26 with elbow pain).

Giles taking it slow

Brian Giles yesterday said the contusion injury in his right knee feels “pretty much the same” as the 2007 injury that landed him on the disabled list for 34 games and required postseason microfracture surgery.

Which is why the right fielder is following a more cautious route this time.

“In 2007, after I injured the knee against that gate at Wrigley Field, I played on it for another two weeks,” Giles said. “My desire to play didn’t do me any good in the long run, not at all. . . . It just made things worse.”

Giles currently has no activity on the knee, which is painful when flexed.

Hairston hot

Scott Hairston and Black were ejected in the third inning by plate umpire Marvin Hudson.

With runners on second and third with one out, Hairston was called out on strikes on a full-count pitch that appeared by be both high and outside on Pitch Track.

It marked Black’s second ejection of the season and Hairston’s first as a Padre.

Miscellany

– Two members of Double-A San Antonio have been selected to play in the Futures All-Star Game on July 12. Right-handed pitcher Mat Latos will pitch for the United States and outfielder Luis Durango (Panama) will play for the World team. Missions manager Terry Kennedy is a coach on the U.S. team.

– Kyle Blanks made his debut at first base yesterday with Adrian Gonzalez serving as the Padres’ designated hitter. Although he played in 31 games as a DH while with Texas in American League games (the last on Sept. 28, 2005), it was Gonzalez’s first appearance as a DH in an interleague game.
