The S1 Slate Is OUT

January 24th, 2010

Next week holds the Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For. The iSlate (or iTablet or whatever the hell it is Apple has cooking) will go from being ridiculous speculation to a Real Honest Product. This is not a good time to be any manufacturer besides Apple. Starting the 27th, and continuing for the next several days (weeks? months?) virtually every organ of the vast Tech Journalism community will either be singing Apple’s praises or condemning this as the Beginning of the End for Jobs and Co.

And yet, I feel a Zen-like calm. Sure, I’m interested as all hell to see what it is Apple has to show, but I think I’ve already found the product I want; the DigitalRise S1 Slate.

10.2″ single-touch screen, Atom 270 processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. It has a card reader, 3 USB slots, 3G support, a SIM slot, and a 1.3 MP forward-facing camera. It comes pre-loaded with Windows 7.

And the design. Whoa, let me talk about the design. This thing looks like it can take every single bit of abuse I could possibly throw at it. If I drop it while I’m rushing to catch a flight, I bet it’ll be working when I pick it up.

I’ve never tried one of these tablets before in my life. It is entirely possible that these tablets are shoddy pieces of crap, but that’s not how it looks. I’m investing some trust in DigitalRise in the hopes that it will bear fruit.
